Sow Exotic Mango ‘Haden’ (Mangifera Indica)

A radiant flush of red saturated the world of tropical fruit, and it’s all because of Haden Mango (Mangifera indica). The gold-red glow of Haden mango is a symbol of luck, which sums up the way this hybrid variety came along. It was a happy accident. No mango varieties showed this red color or near-perfect roundness before. It became the global standard for commercial production, and now 80 percent of the mango industry is Haden. The original tree from which ‘Haden’ Mango came from is still located in Miami, Florida. You could say it’s the American tropical agricultural ambassador to the world. 

Mango species are popular trees in the subtropical Southern home landscape. The glossy evergreen foliage of mango trees makes for a beautiful, shady canopy that requires little upkeep.  Haden Mango trees will reach mature heights of 20-30 feet tall with a canopy spread of about 14-16 feet wide.  Haden mango produces nearly-symmetrical round fruits, which appear green at first, and mature into a deep red shade.

Pick, peel, and eat Haden mangoes freshly off the tree! How can you tell when a mango fruit is ready to harvest? Your nose will know! You should be able to smell a sweet, piney aroma from mango fruit before plucking it off the tree.
